The Laboratory of Quantum Beam Science and Medical Engineering was launched under a new framework on July 1, 2013 with Professor Kikuo Umegaki joining Hokkaido University. Research conducted here involves the application of proton and other quantum beams in medicine to deliver next-generation high-precision radiotherapy. We are committed to the future advancement of this field under the motto of “Using leading-edge science, technology and quantum beams for the prosperous future of humanity.”
We do not only conduct research at the Faculty of Engineering, but are involved in the development and take responsibility for the operation of the Proton Beam Therapy Center of Hokkaido University Hospital, which opened in March 2014 as Hokkaido’s first clinical center for cancer treatment using protons. We are also actively engaged at the Faculty of Medicine and Hokkaido University Hospital to jointly deliver next-generation advanced medical treatment. Future advanced medical treatment will require new technology development through collaboration between medical and industrial sectors.
As we continue our research, we cross the boundaries of engineering and medicine, and actively engage in national projects and industry-academia collaborative research programs. We look forward to welcoming highly motivated students to the team!
