The Laboratory of Quantum Beam Science and Medical Engineering was reorganized on July 1, 2013, following the appointment of former Professor Kikuo Umegaki. Now under the leadership of Professor Taeko Matsuura, the laboratory is dedicated to advancing research on the application of quantum beams, including proton beams, in the medical field, with the goal of realizing next-generation high-precision radiation therapy. Guided by the slogan, “Pioneering cutting-edge science and technology with quantum beams for the future of humanity,” we are committed to collaborating with all of you to drive research that contributes to a brighter future.
Our activities extend beyond the Faculty of Engineering. At Hokkaido University Hospital, the Proton Therapy Center, which we were instrumental in developing and continue to manage, has been in operation since March 2014. This is the first center in Hokkaido to provide cancer treatment using proton beams. We actively collaborate with the Faculty of Medicine and Hokkaido University Hospital to advance next-generation medical treatments. Developing new technologies through medical-engineering collaboration is indispensable for the future of advanced medicine.
